For rural families, home education can sometimes feel like a goal that is difficult or out of reach. Long commutes, limited resources, and a yearning for a more connected learning experience, can make homeschooling a tempting, yet daunting, prospect. Homeschooling isn't just an alternative, but an opportunity to create a thriving educational landscape right at home. Here at STEM Zone, we're passionate about empowering rural families to embrace their homeschooling choice, and ignite a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math in their children.
A holistic approach:
Homeschooling allows you to tailor education to your child's unique interests, but it's also important to expose them to as many subjects and skills as possible that they might naturally be exposed to in a conventional school setting. Even if these areas are out of YOUR comfort zone, we know you are determined to open up opportunities for your children and give them the full range of choices for future pathways that come with early exposure and variety.
Fuelling a Passion for STEM:
You have the ability to ignite curiosity about the natural world by exploring the wonders of your own backyard, or diving deep into local history and science through visits to museums and historical sites, but how deep are you diving? Rural life offers a wealth of educational opportunities just waiting to be discovered, and you can take it to the next level with a scientific approach to the experiences you are engaging with.
Building Strong Family Bonds:
Homeschooling can foster a deep connection between you and your child. You get to witness their "aha!" moments firsthand, celebrate their accomplishments together, and become active participants in their educational journey. This shared experience strengthens family bonds and creates a lasting love of learning.
Unfortunately, these bonds can also be a pain point when it comes to education and what our children think they might want to learn. What do we do when they refuse to engage? As adults, we never stop learning, and we have developed the skills to understand new phenomena by connecting them with existing understanding. We know that young people may think they know what they are interested in, but in fact, they haven’t yet been exposed to all of the wonders of this world, and they may be excluding half of what they could be interested in just because it may look different, or boring, or hard.
Being open with your child from the beginning about why things are significant or valuable and what their role is as a learner can reduce the barriers and some of the heartache when you introduce concepts or skill-developing activities that they don’t think they want to try. You may feel like you are walking a line between being a parent and being an educator, but they are in fact one in the same. Our role is to prepare our young people to thrive with independence and a resilient, incessant pursuit of knowledge and fulfilment.
Addressing Rural Challenges:
We understand the unique challenges faced by rural families. Time constraints are real. Rural families often juggle multiple responsibilities alongside homeschooling, like working farms, managing businesses, or having long commutes. Fewer opportunities may exist for rural homeschooled students to participate in extracurricular activities, sports, or social events. Reliable high-speed internet access may be scarce, hindering online learning resources and communication with other homeschoolers. Limited opportunities for interaction with peers of similar ages and interests can interfere with social development. Experienced tutors, therapists, or other specialists may be located far away, making access to these services difficult and expensive. Homeschooling groups and online communities can provide a valuable support system, and they need to be complemented with in-person connections.
STEM Zone is offering homeschooling classes to address some of these challenges in our community. Our program complements your homeschooling efforts by providing engaging, hands-on workshops that bring STEM subjects to life and offers a space to connect with fellow students and families in an environment that values learning and personal growth. We exist to create STEM learning opportunities for our rural communities and foster intrigue and excitement about our amazing world. Countless resources are available to support you on this journey, including online communities, curriculum options, and added to that list is the dedicated team at STEM Zone.
We are developing our programs to meet the needs of our community. Check out our regular homeschool STEM days, and if you have an idea you want to explore about how we can support your community please get in touch with us and let’s foster that love of learning and personal growth, together!
